Cruising Down Under

Km driven: 517

It's been a while since the end of the race, and posts have slowed a little. That's due to th need to get adjusted to the new lifestyle. But don't worry, there is so much going on that I'm going to have to do some extra posting to keep you all updated. Also, with the amount of K we're going to put on this odometre, there may be upcoming posts about car breakdowns. Soon? Who know. Take some bets maybe. Keep in mind we've got about 5000km to go

The beut van that we got has been keeping us company for the past week and we've had to learn the ins and outs of a different kind of backpacking. And it is different. I'm definetly a 'backpacker', as the definition goes, but this australia trip is very different from the kind of backpacking that has become second nature to me. So now I have to learn to cope with new problems and live differently to make sure that all goes well and we don't stop in the middle of a desert with no fuel.

The car is great! Drives like a dream, or to put it differently, drives like a toolshed. Originally we were supposed to have no aircon but due to a mix up at the rental agency, we were given the wrong van....which for us is the right van because it has a/c and a cassette player. Hoopah. The inner bowels of the car have a double bed and single bed at night or during the day: a table and two cushioned benches, a stove, a fridge, a microwave, sink and some shelves. Additions we've made include: speakers for the iPod, camping chairs donated to us by some aussies, The Killers Hot Fuss cassette and a cowboy hat. Crucial items

We've driven out to Katoomba in the Blue Mountains to try some hiking but were severly rained out. Still, we trekked to the highest peak in the mtns in the rain and saw some beautiful sights. We even played darts in a secluded old-timey pub. Current plans put me in Sydney for tomorrow's Australia Day where an old (old!) buddy of mine from Sunshine Village ski school has given me the invite to a real Aussie bbq. After that it's road trip time to Melbourne which is about 1000km away down south. The drive down will be along the coast and hopefully by the next update I'll tell you how my surfing skills are.

  • Blue Mountains sounds so familiar. Thomas will have a GS race at Blue Mountain on Saturday. Plus Slalom race will take place the next day at Craigleith. We finally have some winter here. Meanwhile, enjoy your Summer guys and make sure you drive on the left side of the road which is the right side there.

  • Hey... think we can get any privacy in that van of yours if I come visit? JUST KIDDING. I'm broke. I won't be visiting. But there's plenty of room in my 9 by 6 jail cell in NYC.

Also taking place in NYC: Britt playing Sir Andrew (yes, that's right... A MAN) in Twelfth Night (Shakespeare!) at NSD. Don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me? Wait... she is me. Come see me be a man.

Don't run out of gas on the road... and if you do... DO NOT LET ANYONE TOW YOU TO HIS FARM!

... Now everyone knows how crazy I am. You're welcome!

  • Surfing, eh?

Sounds cool. That's one of the things on my "Things to do before I die" list. Right after being in a famous band and skydiving, of course :-)

Speaking of bands my band is going around well. We got a name, Wired, (hopefully there isn't some other band that barely anyone knows wih the same name that already exists). We're gonna present in front of the class for our "debut preformance" (aka the music project our teacher assigned us) in 2 weeks with our very own song that we are in the progress of writing which I could say we're almost halfway done. I'll tell you how it goes when we do it, but so far I can boldly predict it's gonna be cool.

Anyways sounds like your new temporary home on wheels is pretty nice and you'll have a lot of fun for the next few weeks.

Can't wait to see you in Austria!

P.S. Correcting dad, from what I heard my GS race is at Craigleith and my slalom race is at Blue Mountain. Just so ya know :P

  • Looks like a helluva good time! It is -19 in Mtl. RRSP season started and we are swamped. You wouldn't believe all the rookies in here. If it is enroute, go wine tasting (if it's free) for me. Godspeed and be safe.

  • Haha yes Thomas! Surfing has been on my list too, as has skydiving and Bullrunning. So I thought why not knock two out of the park in one trip. Good luck with the races and the band. Just remember, if you need an accoustical accompaniment on guitar for one of your shows, I put one a great show with Brown Eyed Girl, or the ever-rare Blue EYed Girl.

Kick some butt and have fun in front of the class, make them smile and they'll love your show

  • Z,

-19? Jeez, we had 40 here a few days ago, that -19 sounds fantastic :-P

We're gonna head to Hunter Valley in a few days for some winetasting, b/c it IS free and definetly worth a look. I'll tip one on the ground for ya. And tell those rooks to pickup the pace so that one day they can aspire to be such Q1 masters as the fabled Zdzislaw Szoltysek

  • A). I've been missing the 3-ply toilet paper in your apartment while living in this dorm with our really cheap 1-ply

B). I'm shocked no one mentioned the company your van comes from is "Britz". I think it's a sign. Come home.

C). Awesome face in that picture in the van. :)

  • I'd have to go with mom and dad on this one.

Like seriously man, I don't know why they didn't make it illegal yet to go to Austrailia without getting a picture of a kangaroo.
